Stylized Samurai Helmet (Hoshi Kabuto)

This project was made for an art test I received from my study abroad in Japan this summer! I roughly had about 4 days to complete the project. I modeled the helmet in Autodesk: Maya, textured it in Substance 3D Painter, then rendered it in Marmoset Toolbag.

The illustrations on the sides of the helmet are supposed to mimic old Japanese style art and represent two different moments/places from my trip in Japan. The left illustration is of the entry gate at Toyo High School in Tokyo and the right is of one of my favorite Shinto shrines called "Takagi-jinja". The middle ornament on the helmet, also known as the maedate, is covered in engravings that represent the Osaka World Expo 2025 mascot. The name of the mascot is "Myaku-Myaku". I really wanted this stylized kabuto to feel like one you'd actually see on display, which is why I decided to have it mounted on a stand. This helmet represents and encapsulates my personal experience with the Japan study abroad. I'm incredibly thankful for the experiences I had and I hope you enjoy this project just as much as I did making it.

Thank you!
